Musicnotes Sheet Music Player App Reviews

5 Customer Reviews:

No way to delete free music?

The app does what it’s supposed to do but I really wish there was a way to get rid of all the free music they give you.

Dan in TO v1.0.19 · 10 years ago

This app is super helpful for learning the tricky parts of the vocals. The follow along notes and vocal guide are amazing. I know some complain that to transpose you have to buy it again but the website was very clear about how that works so I was not surprised or annoyed. If I went to a music store and bought sheet music I would be charged similarly.

Mommadiva1 v1.0.19 · 9 years ago

I downloaded the app with full expectation that I would be able to transpose the song that I had purchased into whatever other key I choose. Upon downloading the song it was clear that it was avaialble in only one other key, which was not what I was looking for. In the end I had to take the time to ranspose the song myself, which was what I was trying to avoid with this app.

RCTenorSax v1.0.19 · 9 years ago

I still think they should take the ultimate guitar approach and just pay a monthly fee for unlimited songs but this is still pretty good. The play back feature is tops. Just still too pricey per sheet music. Love this application though.

Snoopshomes · 10 years ago

The main purpose of this app appears to be to deal with DRM-locked music you buy from them … and it’s about as inconvenient as it gets. I purchased a song from Musicnotes and loaded it from my account into this app. I printed a copy to play from. Then I transposed to a different key and tried to print that. I got a message that all my prints were used up and I had to buy more. No thanks, I’ll get my music elsewhere.

Stopped Using It

I stopped using MusicNotes a few years ago when all of a sudden they degraded the app where you no longer change Midi instruments. Why would they downgrade the app like that?

No multipage view in Mac?

Are you kidding?

Music has weird Xs over the notes

I downloaded a pdf, and the pdf had Xs over the notes. Then I tried contacting customer support, and they told me to print from the app. So I downloaded this app, however, that did not solve the problem. Every time I tried to print from the app, the music showed with Xs over the notes. Then I exceeded print attempts and it would no longer let me try. This company should be reported to the Better Business Bureau. What a scam. I advise you avoid this company.

Absolute Worst App I've Ever Used

So many bugs in this app it is unreal. Musicnotes -- you should be ashamed! From UI glitches causing notes to be cut off of the page, to random crashes, to the inability to even view two pages side-by-side, I could go on.... Musicnotes.com -- FIX YOUR SHI...Please. Sincerely, Customer who spends $5-7 per single piece of music.

Cannot loop on Mac

the ability to loop is critical for learning.

casnbug · 3 years ago

Perfect!

Just what I needed to give a basic piano player the sheet music she needs, ranging from simple to intermediate, plus audio of the tune so she can learn some blues tunes and play along with us!

App won't load on MacOS 10.14.6

The app downloaded successfully but won't load on my Mac laptop running 10.14.6 (Mohave). Unusable app

Music Learner in Seattle · 3 years ago

Incredibly clunky app that makes learning music a pain

This app is incredibly frustrating to use. It is not possible to select a specific part of the song to start playback. You can only start playback at the start of each page. There is also no loop feature. Terrible app. Pales in comparison to PowerTab, a free app that was released in 2000.

Crashes on Mac When Selecting Transposition Feature

The app works fine on my iOS devices; however, it crashes every time I want to transpose or use other features. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled, but it still happens. Here’s part of the error message just in case someone at Musicnotes is reading this: Application Specific Information: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[NSTableView setStyle:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x7ff5da2a6920' abort() called terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException

Badly coded

Whenever you mute the vocal and restart the song the vocal is there again - but the interface shows that it is muted. Also if you fit to the sides and it goes to the next page the page is low res until you zoom out and in again. Also it'd be nice to be able to start at a specific bar. The volume of the playing feature for some reason is very quiet.

Megajumper98 · 4 years ago

App only shows default songs

If you purchase sheet music from Musicnotes be sure to download the pdf because this app won't show it. It just sits there with the default songs.

Shupshe · 4 years ago

What happened?

This software used to be the best. I've used on Mac and PC, there used to be features such as hovering over a note would show the note for a quick check, the ability to chose certain phrases and isolate them. I don't understand, why the change? I see a better version for an M1 chip, which I do not have unfortunately. Hope functionality and features get added soon!

DkFresh89 · 4 years ago

Decent app...

...but apparently no new work on it in the past 2 years to address any of the concerns or "wish list" items seen in the reviews, such as being able to display 2 sheets at the same time (and preferably, the current sheet plus the next sheet - so as it plays and moves to the 2nd displayed sheet, that becomes the first, and the sheet "next up" is displayed with it). Musicnotes needs to show an actual interest in their customer base.

I spent several hundreds of dollars over the years... I expect better

For how much money I have spent for this, I would have expected this app to be at a better spot. I agree with a lot of pointers here but displaying 2 pages at once should have been added AGES ago. I would have left a lower rating but since this is still useful to me I split the difference. I will update it again if they update this app.

Password Doesn't Work - Garbage App

The password saved in my computer (and the one I recorded separately) doesnt work on the app. Outrageous. Total garbage when the password doesnt work lolol.

Music Player

The sheet music, from musicnotes.com, is quality... no problems there, but readers should remeber that this review is for the app. Using a new enough Macbook with latest OS. The play along functions are abysymal.. is that how that is spelled? Two view options: 1. text for ants, views one entire page with microscopic font size. 2. 4 bars... just the treble cleff...visible...what's the change in the next bar going to be?? Anybody's guess, really. You'll find out what that next measure has in store, but not until after it's been played by the backing track! How fun is that? Answer: not at all. Anyways, quality transcriptions though...

Absolutely doesn’t work

it won’t load and it won’t open. Positively useless

pyropig · 5 years ago

So frustrating...

This could be such an amazing app not only for playing / practicing, but also for learning. The fact that you can only display one page at a time is ridiculous and we should also be able to select and loop any part of the music. I've reached out to them about this and get the typical canned responce "thanks for reaching out, we'll pass this on..." blah blah blah. This app has so much potential, it's a shame they ignore it.

Rewind

I've using this app for quite a while and my frustration reminds why I don't use anymore. Not able to rewind or loop sections, important features of a music application.

musicapp turning off

Love the app, but it always turns off. Then you have to restart. Frustrating.

greenolynn · 5 years ago

Will only print double-sided on duplex-enabled printer

There is absolutely no option to print single-sided if you're printing to a duplex-enabled printer. And of course, because of DRM issues, you can't save a PDF and adjust it. (No, no. That costs extra.)

alec_bings · 5 years ago

Absolutely Terrible

I really regret getting this app and purchasing sheet music through this app. The interface is just absolutely terrible. You cannot select where in the sheet music you'd like music to play, so if you are trying to practice just a few measures, you'll have to listen to the entire tab each time. That is just terrible. On top of that, only the sheet music is highlighted as the song plays out, not the tab as well, which makes it more difficult to follow along. I would advise anyone interested in apps like this to not get this one. I have used GuitarPro in the past, and it works amazingly. Very dissapointed.

Mac computer users beware!

I have a fairly new MacBook Air with OS Catalina. If being able to click anywhere on the music, ability to loop sections or not being able to stop/start without going through the entire page then this is not the app for you. Apparently these features are not available on the computer. Here was their reply: Unfortunately, the selection and looping features are not present within the Musicnotes app for Mac. The Musicnotes app for Mac and the Musicnotes app for iOS, for iPhones and iPads, do have discrepancies in available features at this time. Disappointing. I really need these features to learn difficult parts of a song. They gave me a refund but would have been nice for them to disclose these deficiencies.

So Far So Good But...

This app does what I need, but I really wish I could see more than one page at a time. There is plenty of space on my screen to see at least 2, if not 3 pages at a time, yet there's all this extra space on each side of the one page when in "full screen" mode...

Crashed my computer

I downloaded the app yesterday, and today I was having problems I've never had before. I use a Mac Book Pro, and the key board and track pad kept freezing. When I'd try to restart the computer, it wouldn't restart normally. Finally once I was able to get back on, I had the suspicion it was the new app. Since deleting it, I have had no problems.

The perfect mix of productivity and performance!

Up until now, I've kept a tattered binder of printed sheet music with me (which often gets lost between lessons). I love how easy it is to organize my music and rehearse outside of lessons. Because I don't play the piano, the instrumental playback with tempo options is a game changer for me! Big fan!

Used to be a 5

Editing my previous review. Restarted my iPad this morning, and purchasing worked fine (perhaps the I.T. Crowd solution would have fixed it last night). Correcting my previous statement: purchasing sheet music is/was routed through the app store. Now that it’s working, I’m happy to give a much higher rating. It still used to be a five. The only reason that I’m giving it a 4 is that during my troubleshooting, I couldn't figure out how to access my account details from the app. I had to go back to my MacBook and access the website. I’d prefer to be able to have the same functions available from device to desktop and website, so that wherever I’m working, I can take care of what needs to be done. Another UX note: When purhasing music, only the first page is available to view. I understand why they’ve done it this way, but I’d like to check the accuracy of some passages or see how the transriber handled the arrangement before purchasing. I’ve managed to make all my purchases work, though. Leaving my previous review below for reference. ---------- Used the app for several weeks, then something broke. It might have been that I upgraded the app(?). I can’t buy sheet music anymore. Pretty sure I was using PayPal previously. Saw a notice that the app now accepts ApplePay. Activated a card on ApplePay. Still no good. The core competence of the app should be to purchase and download music, and here I am trying to figure out how to give the company my money. Also, the iOS app offers confusing feedback as to whether I’m a Pro member. I see the Pro member price, but there’s a button prompting me to learn more about being a Pro member—this while I’m logged in (I logged out and logged back in, too). Also I can not seem to be able to access my account information within the iOS app. Perhaps I can, but a reasonable rule of UX/UI is that if you can’t find it, you can’t do it. I completed a service request on my iPad, tapped the Submit button, and the screen went blank—no confirmation that my request was submitted. No email yet that it was submitted. Musicnotes, if you can get this to work, great. I’m open-minded. Otherwise, we need to discuss refunding or pro-rating my Pro membership fee for the month. If the core function can't be worked out in the next few days, I’ll have to find another service.

Unable to create account.

Just downloaded the app. It only allows you to SIGN IN but NOT create account so you can sign in!!! What a joke. A worthless app if you can’t sgin in.

Costs more in the app

I was told that in the IOS app I would see $1 off on prices, however the price for the piece I was buying was $2 higher in the store than on the website. La La Land Suite

Works Perfectly

As of October 15th 2019 this app has absolutely no issues whatsoever. I can open all my music, zoom in and out, etc. Perfect.

No Playback Features - Pretty Useless for Practice

Incredibly dissapointing playback features. I don’t understand how this wasn’t a top priority when developing the app. You cannot select what note/measure to start playback from, nor can you loop a section, alter tempo, or anything else that would seem common sense to include. I can’t imagine that if you have a program that can read the MIDI from the sheet music it would be all that difficult to include these features. Sheetmusicdirect.com has these features built into their website. I think I’ll be getting more of my sheet music from them from now on simply for this reason. You guys need to get on this problem ASAP. Otherwise, what’s the point in donwloading this “player?”

Worked great for me!

initally, I looked at the 2.5 star rating and almost took a pass. I downloaded one song to check it out and was not disappointed. Within, 5 minutes I had the song I needed and was easily able to transpose it into a brighter key. I'm not sure what everyone elses problem was but I had no problem with my Mac. I may look at going with the Pro option after I look at the library of available meaterial. Very happy so far!

Pipesgr8 · 6 years ago

Music not showing up in library

Everything I downloaded for free shows up but nothing I paid for is showing up. And with the minimal controls, theres nothing I can do about it. This app is completely useless. I've been using music notes since I was very young, before I had to pay extra for PDF printing and when the sheet music was like $3 (AKA- before this company got greedy and stingy with printing / formatting / etc). I still use it because they have everything and its composed nicely. I'm disappointed this company, website and app, have seemed to go downhill.

Belise06 · 7 years ago

Abysmal

Being a guitar player and familiar with Guitar Pro and some of the fairly powerful music viewers for that I expected some level of functionality from Music Notes. Not for it to necessarily be that in depth, but I mean even really basic stuff like skipping to a section in a song seems to be missing from the OSX App. It's truly unbelievable that if I want to hear a section of the song at the bottom of the page I have to play it from the top. And if I want to reduce the tempo and practice a looped section? Nope, not on the computer for some reason, better pull out the phone with the iOS Music Notes app for that. Such a joke. Use Music Notes for the paper sheet music, but if expecting any sort of digital functionality then look elsewhere.

Mac Book Pro

I am not able to view my music on the app once it has downloaded. I am hoping that there will be an update soon. Impossible to study before printing and trying to read music on an iphone screen.

MelFlynn · 7 years ago

Update Needed

Mac users are having difficulty using this app, since Apple's Mojave update. It would be great if Musicnotes could be updated this year, as it was a very useful app in the past.

gbread7 · 7 years ago

Useful!

Good app. Love the markup tools, but it desperately needs to add Apple Pencil support. Otherwise, I find the features helpful.

L.K. Darcy · 7 years ago

Great learning aid

For what I do, learn particular songs, this app is a good aid. You organize your music, modulate between keys, modify the tempo , adjust music settings for guitar chords only. It’s also pretty intuitive.

Bradleybt · 7 years ago

Very helpful

I haven’t experienced any of the anomalies that I’m reading about in others’ reviews. So I’m on board with the service—the printing from the URL as well as the app. I’m pleased that the app plays the chords and melodies, even if the page turns are clumsy and don’t respond in real time.

elliottdelman · 8 years ago

Love the App

But, it is crashing in MacOS High Sierra (10.13).. Please send us an update!

Nice that Musicnotes provides this app

There are quite a few publishers providing paid sheet music and Musicnotes is one of them. I have been buying sheet music from Musicnotes and other publishers for years. Musicnotes sheet music is excellent. Their purchase price is on par with any other publisher and the restrictive printing policy is part of the industry, not this or any other company. This app works exactly as described. Providing an app to organize music they publish is a feature. Maintaining that app on the app store is indicitave of the quality of the company: Apple vets apps you download here which protects you from malware.

TANGOdiscovery Arizona · 8 years ago

Lame software

Transposing limited, worked for my needs but why not every key? The playback feature is a great concept, abysmally executed. It can’t rewind, loop, skip… what were they thinking? This is as primitive and featureless as software can be and still be called software. Amateur effort. I will look for other publishers who take some pride in their product and show a little more interest in their customers.

Won’t Let Me Sign In Because It Says I’m Not Connected

Not sure what else to say—I am connected to the internet but when I try to sign in it says I need to connect to the internet. There does not seem to be a way to troubleshoot this problem.

TripLangley · 8 years ago

Takes your money, but does not let you print

I tried unsuccessfully to print from the website. I thought maybe I should try the button that says download app. When I did this after I paid a second time for the sheet music I expected that I would be able to print out the music from the app, but instead I just got a message that said all my prints had been used. Ultimatley I got nothing and they got my money twice. In other words, I got robbed. Don’t use this or the online service.

Greg Knutson · 9 years ago

DO NOT BUY! Ripoff

this is an awful app. You buy the music and you can only print once and have to pay for the privilege to print again!

tom.kubilius · 9 years ago

I Hate This App

I just paid $10 for two small pieces of music online. I printed out the music immediately after the purchase and expected the ability to download the PDF file of the music I just forked money over for. But no, they insist you download the app in order to view the music. When I then downloaded the app, the music I paid money for was in the list but I was barred from printing it again unless I paid another $10. I can view the music in the app, but it’s kind of ackward placing my laptop computer on a music stand to play from. As far as I know, when I buy a piece of music, it doesn’t limit me to 1 time of opening up the music before it being locked and having to pay for it again. Useless app.

Egone · 9 years ago

Download

Music note is terrible, I purchased to download and print online. I printed but when I went to download it, it didn’t even give me that option until I had to log out and log in a couple of times. Finally the download button appreared and I attempted to download one song but it was taking forever like it was frozen or wasn’t able to. I tried a few times. Music notes is terrible and total waste of money. I was trying to download the sheet music so I could get it printed into a larger size and frame for my family. I feel like I got scammed.
